Both were named for the Kansas river. The location of the mouth of the Kansas river flowing into the Missouri establishes the longitude that the whole western border of Missouri (except for the Platte Purchase). Basically Kansas state is where the Kansas river flows and Kansas City began where the river ends.

I second humidity. I just checked the dew point in Miami. It was around 74 F. If the smoke detector has been kept at a room temperature lower than 74 and is exposed to outdoor air, condensation might occur.

Alfalfa hay is the smell of my childhood. It makes me incredibly nostalgic.

This is such a a complicated subject that some people dedicate the majority of their library career to it. Most collection development/maintenance methods are somewhat based on MUSTIE (misleading, ugly, superseded, trivial, irrelevant, or obtained elsewhere) and CREW. A free PDF about CREW from the Texas state library is a good place to start. https://www.tsl.texas.gov/ld/pubs/crew/index.html
