I really like the sense of optimism and camaraderie here. I hope it lasts! I hated posting and commenting on Reddit because people there are downright vitriolic.

I thought the scientific approach was all about coming up with a hypothesis to test, testing it, and then adjusting the hypothesis based off the results. Scientific research is always changing based off what we learn, if a community is applying legitimate analysis to a problem then they shouldn’t be harangued just because they haven’t found the answer yet.

It’s entirely possible that particle or string or quantum theory isn’t the answer. We’ll get there one day though!

Even back on Reddit I tended to call them groups, communities, fora, etc. Sublemmy is a cute word but I’d hate to have to say it to a nonline person, and I feel like it gives Reddit too much sway if we just migrate all the terms to this new space

Someone recreated that community here!

I’m a little guilty of this myself since I’m trying to see which instance I want to settle on, so I’ve made a few duplicate communities across the three I’m on (Lemmy, kbin, shitjustworks.)

That having been said, while they may be very similar now, I assume that each will develop its own unique flavor so to speak. There is probably also a sizable pool of folks who prefer local communities since they are probably choosing their instance based off of moderation, wanting communities to follow specific guidelines.

Yeah I like the aesthetic but it needs to be just a bit more visible. I think it might even be a dotted line currently. If it were solid and a pixel or two wider it would be great

I think for now it’s working as intended. There is an unprecedented amount of new users, after all. I imagine that over time, probably by the end of the year, communication between instances will be much more seamless once bugs get squashed

So theoretically you should be able to make one account and view a majority of content. This is barring of course any instances or communities defederated from your home instance.

There’s merit in making a community for your interest on your home instance even if you’re subscribed to it on a different instance, for reasons like outages and a diversity of content. Lemmy being bigger than other instances just means there’s more content available here, but if you like the layout of kbin or Mastodon or what have you better you can still see it all.

Plus, just because two instances are federated doesn’t mean the users actually see all the information exchanged. You have to actually opt into it which is cool- ie if an instances particular community is problematic you can just block it and sub to the rest.

Edit: got so wrapped up in my TED talk I forgot to mention- I’m currently trying out Lemmy, sh.itjust.works, and kbin.social until I can settle on one (hopefully kbin gets an app soon lol.)

I like the greys and greens personally but I want as many options as possible! A few more presets and even just one custom would be fabulous

It’s hilarious to me because it’s not even for them per se, it’s for other men and they still want to crow about “alpha” and “no homo”.

Jokes aside, it’s a pretty disgusting culture surrounding cars.
