“long-standing conventions” is how you end up with Internet Explorer still pre-installed on Windows Server 2025.
And when was the last time you used the tar “tape archiver” to archive things on tape?

Do you know which version of tar it is?
Unix or GNU/Linux?

  • Acquire a boxset for Windows 95 from your local Microsoft partner
  • BACK UP YOUR DATA!
  • Follow the installation instructions printed on your Setup floppy (WARNING: Don’t use the Boot floppy or you’ll lose your data!)

For reference:

  • Once you’ve installed all 13 floppy disks, reboot.

  • Connect your modem, dial into your phone line, and point Internet Explorer to http://v2.windowsupdaterestored.com to check for updates and install all of them.

  • (Microsoft’s own website for Windows 95 updates is currently experiencing some temporary downtime.)

  • From this point on, you can do in-place-upgrades through the versions by following each Windows version’s installation instructions.

  • If you run into hardware compatibility issues, contact your hardware vendor for up-to-date drivers.

  • IMPORTANT: Make sure you own a valid license for each version of the Microsoft Windows operating system before you install!

When I point an (un)packing program at a packed archive, the default action should be to fucking unpack it.
And when I point it at anything else, it should pack it into the default format.

Everything else can be options.
