There are many servers to choose from:

  1. Prosody
  2. ejabberd
  3. Openfire
  4. Tigase
  5. MongooseIM
  6. Metronome

They are easy to set up, and low on resources.

That’s true. But it’s nice to have an account on a federated messenger and use it with a couple close contacts, as you won’t feel affected by the constant threats to centralized services.
