First of all, it’s not a guarantee that an independent post-war Ukraine would swing authoritarian (it’s also not unlikely given the global trend towards authoritarianism, however Ukraine has built strong relations with the West which would strongly encourage they continue westernizing to continue reaping the economic and social benefits of good relations with the West)

I “now claim?” What do you even mean? One country is making progress on LGBTQ rights and doesn’t legally persecute members of the community, the other just labeled the entire LGBTQ rights movement as an extremist organization!
In a war spawned by an attempted annexation, this is a war of continued countryhood or not. This isn’t some petty land dispute over some shitty little island or some acres of farmland, this isn’t a grinding war of people in power who can’t talk to eachother like grownups where the folks on the ground ultimately have little dog in the fight other than surviving, it’s literally a war of “do I continue living in a growing, modernizing democracy with western ties or a backsliding authoritarian dictatorship that’s constantly trying to relive the Soviet glory days”
Just within your own framework of “west good, authoritarianism bad” how do you reconcile the fact that the US has the world’s largest prison population and the highest rate of incarceration of any major country (by a completely absurd margin too)? Is that not authoritarian? Or is that word essentially meaningless and more of a vibes based accusation for thought terminating purposes? You don’t actually need to answer this as you are not the first lib we’ve ever spoken to, but if you want to try by all means go ahead and make a funny comment for us.

Let me illustrate the dynamic to you so you can step outside your own personally constructed logic labyrinth:
- The US views some country as an enemy for whatever reason, so attacks it either directly or through proxy or sanctions
- The US ruling class cares about the perception of their legitimacy, so they have to sell this action to most segments of US society
- The messaging targeted at liberals focuses on things liberals care about that the targeted country is bad at, like gay rights
- The targeted country takes this messaging and uses it domestically to sell additional crackdowns on gay rights as anti-imperialism
- This crackdown is used to justify further action against the country by credulous liberals like yourself
- The only people who get screwed are the gays, being faced with the twin joys of a domestic crackdown and US bombs/sanctions/whatever
At no point in the liberal mind is it considered that the US ruling class does not give one single tiny shit about the rights of gay people in targeted country, or even proxy country. It is purely and entirely bait to get them to support bombing things. One doesn’t have to go too far back in history, if at all, in the US to find actions against gay people that, if they’d taken place in the targeted country, would be used to justify liberal support for bombing the place.
Imagine thinking Ukrainr, the country that banned opposition parties and Russian-language media of all kinds (not just from Russia itself) while having never stood for queer rights nor the rights of ethnic minorities is less dictatorial.
