I saw another post here with very good recommendations on anarchist readings, but it was mostly non-fiction. Do you know about works of fiction (games, films, books…) that speculate how a fully-fledged anarchist society could be like (as in Ursula K Le Guin ‘The Dispossessed’)?

Something similar that I have enjoyed reading was The Culture series, but it is sort of arguable on whether or not that is an anarchist society. All of the individuals basically are able to do whatever they want and they live on the principle of live and let live. However, AI minds do tend to have a lot of say on what happens or doesn’t so it’s sort of blurry on whether everyone is truly free or they are being manipulated. But most in society are living happy and fulfilled lives.

True! I think the depictions of daily life in the Culture was what I enjoyed the most in Banks books.

Does not explicitly mention anarchism, but the society outlined in this recent book is clearly inspired by anarchist ideas.

Thanks! I did read ‘The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet’ a while ago, but didn’t know where to continue with Becky Chambers. I will take a look at that one.

echoing other suggestions here, i think Margaret Killjoy’s A Country of Ghosts, and Becky Chambers’s Monk and Robot series are some of the best examples (and Monk and Robot is a solarpunk anarchist series too). i think Cory Doctorow’s Walkaway is also worth a read.

Are you an Anarchist? The answer might surprise you!

Rules:

  1. Be respectful
  2. Don’t be a nazi
  3. Argue about the point and not the person
  4. This is not the place to debate the merits of anarchism itself. While discussion is encouraged, getting in your “epic dunks on the anarkiddies” is not. As a result of the instance’s poor moderation policies and hostility toward anarchists by default, lemmygrad users are encouraged not to post here, though not explicitly disallowed if they aren’t just looking to start a fight.
