Unfortunately, that is the destiny of virtually every social media subreddit, chat room, or other group.

People tend to want to congregate with like-minded people, and it becomes especially easy for that to quickly devolve from a social group into an echo chamber. And as echo chambers grow and evolve, they tend to disapprove of dissenting opinions more and more. Anybody who has a dissenting opinion or otherwise is even willing to admit that maybe the other side has a point once in a while will quickly be seen as “traitors to the cause”. If you are not 100% with “us”, then you are 100% with “them”. There is no in between.

If this place takes off, the same will happen here. Subworlds, or whatever they’re called on here, will all have their own little niches with their own little echo chambers and their own little tribalism. It’s been that way since the dawn of social media, and it’s been that way since the dawn of time.

It is ironic that the internet was developed so people could hear and share ideas, and instead everybody largely just sought out their own little echo chambers. And even if you do find a small group of like minded individuals, that group is itself the exact echo chamber it seeks to avoid.

Democrats are trying to say “see what good our party has done”. The problem is that the Republicans are shouting “See how bad the other party is” much, much louder.

Doesn’t matter how much of an adult you are trying to be. The screaming baby on the other side of the room that’s pulling a constant temper tantrum and throwing his toys around wildly is the one that’s going to get the attention.

It depends on what he meant by “Politics”. I was discussing the state of politics in general in this country. You would be correct if he’s merely talking about the state of this community.

My god, I wonder if people understand how truly horrific this ruling is.

This ruling directly says that lies are, as they call it, “protected free speech” and specifically prohibits the government from being able to do anything meaningful to combat it. So the next time some dumbass group says that vaccines are made of radioactive waste and will turn you into one of the aliens from District 9, the government won’t be able to do anything to stop them.

But a children’s book that discusses little Suzy and her two mommies is too much for society to handle and is therefore not also protected speech. Because reasons. Or something.

We have one of those Moms for “Liberty” groups in my area. After they got LGBTQ books banned from schools and libraries, their new thing is going after literature relating to disability awareness.

Right-wing politics are all about performative outrage and fearmongering. They need everybody focused on a “boogeyman”, and once they conquer that boogeyman, they need to find a new boogeyman to get everyone riled up about and keep the rubes focused on anything but their policy ideas.

Mitch McConnell champions this. He has mentioned on record several times to make sure the party doesn’t focus on their own policies because of how unpopular they are, and instead to just spend 100% of the time telling everybody how whatever the Democrats are doing is bad in order to keep the attention focused elsewhere.

They were successful at killing Roe. Now the new boogeyman is the LGBT community. And apparently in your area it’s disabled people because hey, kicking people while they’re down is fun. and once they feel like they won whatever battle they’re waging against the disabled, it’ll be another disadvantaged group.

Because punching down is all the GOP has.

This is incorrect.

There is a such thing as a “conservative intellectual”. It’s just that they’ve been long since drowned out by the rest of the party, and the right-wing voting base has no appetite for actual, sensible conservative policies right now.

This is the exact answer. It’s also the reason why, for example, most major news outlets refused to call Trump’s lies “lies” for years. A word may have one meaning in everyday conversation, but has a completely different meaning that carries infinitely more weight in a court of law.

Usually it’s some court procedure, some clerical process, something actually quite boring. I remember during the election they were getting mad over ballots being picked up by some guy in a van - well, that’s the guy who picks em up

Remember that a woman and her daughter continue to have their lives turned upside down because one was caught on camera handing the other a mint, and the GOP have still not let it go to this day.

I will guaran-fucking-tee you that even if she were charged with disseminating revenge porn, it would immediately be twisted by the GOP to say that the prosecution is an entirely political move against a “whistleblower” who was releasing information on “the Biden Crime Family” that Biden was trying to cover up.

This is what our political and legal system has come to.
