My mental state using reddit vs lemmy.

Listen, I like lemmy, but it is turbo-doomer compared to Reddit. I think one of the biggest differences is that the smaller reddit communities that I’d use to escape the doomer shit like /r/furry_irl or /r/polandball just don’t really exist here.

Same here. I generally prefer Lemmy at this point but I absolutely hate how everything is politics on here. Even the meme communities are half the time just shitty talking points in a meme template.

So much negativity all the time and all of it is essentially useless because virtually everyone on Lemmy is at least progressive already. So the comments are just a bunch of people agreeing with each other how terrible everything is.

It’s really exhausting.

Then make the community, there are plenty of people interested.

You’re just experiencing the eternal cycle of social media, life, death and rebirth. any new social media will be predominantly, progressives and liberals. This steady state won’t last for long because eventually right-wingers and your mother’s friends will join in thus reducing the value of this new media to zero. by then, progressives such as yourself may have found an entirely new social media center to complain about.

There’s a sweet spot between concentration and dilution. I hope lemmy can self regulate that ratio.

Do you have a few minutes to talk about our Lord and Saviour, Linus Torvalds?

That’s a good segue! One place here that I’ve noticed has way less toxicity than reddit is the Linux communities. I found the reddit Linux subs had a load of gatekeeping, people tended more towards going: if you can’t figure out how to use a search engine you probably shouldn’t be using Linux.
And then complaining that the general public doesn’t want to use Linux.

Here on lemmy I see a lot more people hopping in a thread to say things like: here’s the solution to your beginners issue, and here’s how to look it up. If you have more issues just shoot me a reply and I’ll gladly give you any help I can.

It’s really refreshing to be honest.

Otherwise I very much agree there’s a lot of doom posting everywhere else.

It’s almost like politics touches on every aspect of the lives we live, from the brick we stand in to the air we breathe.

Reddit does have working niche communities though. If it’s too much you can always switch to a feed of nothing but shitposts and your hobbies. Here not so much

I refuse to believe there’s no adequate furry community on the fediverse.

I do hope in time more niche communities will pop up. As long as people stay active, the less lazy (or those with more free time) will make the little communities we miss.

One is fitting into a mold, trapped by social norms the other one is free. I find this MEME to be quiet the complement.

It’s the opposite for me, actually. I use Lemmy far less than I ever used Reddit, so its easier to actually not feel so addicted.

Same except I still need to fill a void. So now I find myself browsing imgur and YouTube more than ever, and neither is any better than reddit. I may have a serious problem.

Totally possible! I try to fill the void with purposeful consumption, or getting things done.

I gave up Reddit and started on Lemmy, but also started speed cubing. Now when I have time to kill I’ll just get my cube out instead of mindlessly scrolling.

I can now on average, solve a Rubik’s cube in around 40 seconds.

Just an idea of how much time was consumed scrolling politics on Reddit

Absolutely! I’ve picked up reading, and finished the first full novel in years for me. I picked Dune, and actually enjoyed it a lot, even if I overall felt myself questioning if Frank ever knew a real woman in his life.

The best way to escape the doomer shit like you did on Reddit is to create equivalent Lemmy communities. For example, I personally wanted to see more Bingus memes on Lemmy, so I created !bingus@lemmy.ml so that the Fediverse could be graced with the presence of Bingus.

If you liked r/furry_irl and r/polandball on Reddit, and want to see that kind of stuff on Lemmy, all you gotta do is hit that little “create community” button and replicate all your favorite escapes from political nonsense and Linux memes (tho I must admit Linux memes are really cool).

Yeah, the Lemmy communities you create may not get as big as their Reddit counterparts, but that’s just kinda how it works around here.

Yeah, but then I’d have to be a moderator and I just don’t really have the energy or dedication for that. Especially if I wanted to run a polandball community on par with reddit’s. They had some hardcore rules.

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !bingus@lemmy.ml

Agreed. Lemmy seems to be Linux, Star Trek, politics, and a dash of shitpost.

I can handle all of it except the constant feed of politics. It’s a US election year so that probably accounts for a lot of it.
