I recently saw a Christian organization who rescued over 300 enslaved children. While this post is still valid and needs attention we need to stop pretending that it’s being ignored and actually help those people who are rescuing fugitives, refugees and slaves instead of just bashing an ideology online

I hate Christo-fascists as much as the next guy, but to think that ALL people of Christian faith are evil and tyrannical is a nonstarter unto itself.

Eh, my advice is to not hate them. Hate (albeit disguised as righteousness) is their brand… We should pity them, you know, like Jesus might.
Nothing defeats fake religious people like the positive teachings of their own professed religion. Fight cruelty with kindness.
The good eggs, that is to say the Christian/Catholic folks that actually follow the teachings of Jesus, will not mind you denigrating those of their “flock” that do not. Most of them will actually tend to apologize for them, and explain they are lost. These types also almost never try to judge you if you’re not a believer.

Yeah, it’s a double edged sword… I hate when people rag on religion in the same manner certain religious types rag on atheism. That feels like hipocracy, and it’s very common here on Lemmy in the atheist groups.
This said, memes like the one above are fair representation of the grand majority of politically-motivated, religious voters.
You’re not wrong, but you seem to be suggesting that people are taking this low effort meme as a fact. It’s a generalization that holds very true for the masses, not an infallible statement without the possibility of exception.
I don’t know any religious folks that do what your referring to… Not a one. Sure, I believe there are millions of them that do, but the majority (let’s say, over 60-80 million?) don’t seem to.
Nobody needs to seek out and help children in need to be a good person, there are a LOT of issues in the world that need attention… But these types are fighting a war against women in the name of helping children, and the vast majority of them are doing nothing to actually help children. In fact, they tend to be creating massive problems for children as a whole (I’m not sure many will appreciate their mothers being 13 at birth, or their fathers being rapists, or being given up for adoption because they were 100% unwanted.)
Even then, there’s some problem christian organizations doing these things the wrong way - such as offering money for ‘enslaved children’ and in the process creating child slave markets where none existed.
I have no doubt these organizations have good intentions, but if people aren’t more critical of these organizations they can and will do more harm than good.
And close by my home a Catholic School won a court case, this week, where they argued they had a right to fire a part-time art teacher for getting pregnant out of wedlock. The response to hearing that someone with a low income is going to have to raise a child herself was to take away their tiny income stream.
I agree, I’m always really annoyed to see these kinds of memes. I feel like all the “but what about foster kids” or “what about refugees”? as literal whataboutism arguments against pro-life ideology is entirely unproductive. Every single foster parent I know is religious and specifically Christian (and I know quite a few because I’m trying to get into fostering myself). It’s not because they’re better people, but we need to stop acting like all religious people are bigoted and conservative. Because of my religious upbringing, I’m nervous around religious people. I’m nervous they’ll treat us badly because we’re gay, or scare my child who already has anxiety the same way they did to me, or bully my kid because he wears girl clothes, etc. And it’s good to be cautious, but I’ve been learning a lot of religious people are not bigoted and a lot of them are not even conservative. A lot of them foster and they volunteer to help sick kids, in fact that’s the only place I’ve been meeting them.
Also, not all pro-life people are religious. Abortion used to be a nuanced subject. Now it seems so much more divisive, but there are still a lot of left learning and nonreligious people who don’t like high abortion rate, or don’t like abortion outside of medical emergencies. Even one of my very best friends whom I’ve known for 10 years (who is gay and atheist and extremely liberal) recently said, very quietly, “I don’t really think it’s a good option outside of medical necessity, but I try not to speak about women’s issues because it’s not my place.” People are afraid to stray from their “side” too loudly. I just wish people could have a real conversation without feeling like they’ll get in trouble with their own people for not being extreme enough, for seeing the nuance in a complicated subject.
I think the people simply saying “you can’t because God said no” are stupid, but most people have actual reasons. Likewise, the people who just make these dumb memes instead of giving any facts or insight are also not contributing. There’s an actual interesting and import discussion to have about the right to live, right to terminate, etc. but it’s like no one is able to talk about the actual topic, just “those guys think a bad thing and we hate them.” And we absolutely need to be doing more to help enslaved children, refugees, orphans, etc.
Yesyes, some are christians and good people (no, not because). While others use christianity as excuse for their agenda.
It isn’t that you can’t be a moral person and a god-fearing one, it is just more difficult. Sometimes when I know a religious person who makes a real effort to help people I just want to yell at them “think of how much more you could do if you aren’t arguing with your imaginary friend all the time”.
This issue made me an atheist. I had already lost my faith but I had decided to not really consider the question, for years. It was watching Christian leaders hate on refugees that made me sit down with myself and decide what exactly it was that I believed. They showed me it wasn’t an academic question.
Since 2018 I have sheltered, in my own home, a few immigrants with their children. It is nice being my own authority on morality and not following some shaman in a man-dress.
These concerns are very real to many religious folks, but they are 100% derivituve of political propaganda. These types have no idea of the lengths they’ve been manipulated by their political party.
