it’s less of this and more of prop65 the size of rationalist footnote

actual pictograms are not vibes based, there are thresholds for toxicity, flash point etc

there are no real enforced requirements of accuracy, most of typical known hazards are covered by generic useless advice and everything else is just filled by “no information”

found this linked in ed zitron comment section for some reason: https://www.funraniumlabs.com/2024/04/phil-vs-llms/

With a moment’s contemplation after reading it, I just realized how spectacularly bad this could go if, for example, you went to do a search for an chemical’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and a Large Language Model (LLM) gave you back some bullshit advice to take in the event of hazmat exposure or fire.

joke’s on you, MSDSs are already dogshit. these things only exist to cover ass of manufacturers and are filled with generic, useless advice https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/uselessness-msds https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/un-safety-data-sheets there is MSDS for sand, MSDS for tear gas and ethanol lists the same dangers, toxicity is overemphasized (because it’s common) and some other dangers like explosiveness are underappreciated (because it’s not), we don’t even need LLMs for this, humans (lawyers mostly i guess) did the same on accident

also bonus points for first-principling what could have been instead of asking somebody that actually knows, like any proper rationalist would do. also, vinyl chloride is not reactive with water and spraying pressurized containers with water can be a sensible thing to do, because this cools them down, so it decreases pressure meaning it decreases risk of rupture, which would be a bad thing, if manageable for firefighters to do it safely. see: some fires involving propane tanks

An MSDS may not tell you what respirator to use;

Slander! MSDS will tell you to use the right one (“appropriate respirator”), it’s your job to figure out what it is

Read through the paper looking for sample jokes, found none. :(

you can’t even say “comedy ensues” because it doesn’t

real

spent last 3 days figuring out lebanese politics. this is my fourth attempt, it’s an unmitigated civil war with at least 4 sides that in some forms is still ongoing and has been for almost 60 years. every single time you look up any atrocity it gets worse and there are at least two more layers of revenge. there’s everything, remnants of colonialism, cold war era proxy conflicts, military interventions by syria and israel and covertly by everyone else, every party has a militia, seats in parliament are divided by religion according to results of 1932 census, nobody wants a newer one because it risks massive sectarian instability

no it’s not, but if you translate it word for word into english it’s “law and justice” which sounds like a name of a party that just staged a coup and now leads military junta in some broke subsaharan african country

and also catholic church went out of their way to use psalm 33 literal hour before lots of people vote (vote is on sunday and in smaller towns and villages lots of people go voting just after mass) half year away when it was supposed to because it has a line like “the lord loves law and justice”, yeah completely nothing political about it, please ignore all these sketchy real estate deals that catholic church benefited from

similar thing happened in last elections in poland but with much, much more preparation. polish senate is elected in first past the post system. everyone that is not PiS (conservatives) and Konfederacja (crackpot-libertarian-nationalist-prorussian union) agreed to send only one candidate, so that collectively everyone voted against PiS. 66/100 seats in senate now belongs to them

it’s not airgapped, it’s still cloud, it can’t be. it’s some kind of “secure” cloud that passed some kind of audit. openai already had a breach or a few, so i’m not entirely sure it will pan out
