The thing is, in some ways it does work, it’s just unhealthy as shit and other, more pleasant, means may be more effective in the long run anyway.
Just to add my thoughts. There is no rock bottom and you can keeping going lower. Often our emotion response independent of environmental effects. Feelings of self-hate just push you further from progress. Even in cases where action is taken from self-hate (eg exercise), it is unsustainable. Dealing with self-image issues for my whole life (I cant recognise myself in the mirror) “fixing the problem” doesn’t change how you see things.
